Gearing and towing: what actually changes
Your truck's maximum towing capacity is a safety rating determined by the manufacturer based on frame strength, brake capacity, and cooling system design — it does not change when you regear, and you should never exceed the rating on your door-jamb sticker or owner's manual regardless of your axle ratio. What regearing does affect is how hard your engine has to work to reach and maintain towing speed. Larger tires without a corresponding gear change effectively tall-gear your truck, pushing RPM down and forcing the engine and transmission to work harder under load — often leading to excessive heat, more frequent downshifting, and reduced towing comfort even though the rated capacity is unchanged. Regearing to restore your factory-intended RPM range at towing speed is about restoring drivability and reducing strain on your drivetrain, not increasing what you're rated to pull.
