What is regearing and why do I need it?

Regearing is the process of replacing your differential ring and pinion gears with a different ratio. When you install larger tires, they effectively raise your gear ratio, reducing engine RPM and power. Regearing restores factory performance, improves fuel economy, and reduces transmission strain.

How do I know what gear ratio I currently have?

Check your vehicle door jamb sticker, glove box sticker, or differential cover tag. You can also count driveshaft rotations: jack up the vehicle, mark the driveshaft and tire, rotate the tire one full revolution, and count how many times the driveshaft rotates. That number is your gear ratio.

Do I need to regear for 33-inch tires?

It depends on your factory tire size and gear ratio. If you are going from 30" to 33" tires, regearing is optional but recommended. If you are going from 32" to 33", you may not notice much difference. Use our calculator for a precise recommendation.

What is the best gear ratio for 35-inch tires?

For most trucks, 4.56 or 4.88 gears work well with 35" tires. Heavier trucks or those used for towing may benefit from 5.13 gears. Your factory ratio, engine power, and driving style also matter.

Crawl ratio is the combined gear reduction from your transmission and transfer case multiplied by your differential ratio. Lower crawl ratios (under 40:1) provide better low-speed control for off-roading and rock crawling.

Proper regearing can improve fuel economy by keeping your engine in a more efficient RPM range at highway speeds. However, if you regear too aggressively, you may see worse fuel economy due to higher engine RPM.
