Ford Axle History & Gearing Evolution

Ford's solid rear axles have anchored the F-150 and Super Duty lineup for decades, with the 8.8" and 9.75" ring gears serving half-ton trucks and Broncos. Verified factory ratio options on recent F-150s are 3.15, 3.31, 3.55, and 3.73 — 3.31 pairs with the FX4 package, while 3.73 is the Max Tow ratio on EcoBoost-equipped trucks. Super Duty (F-250/F-350) uses a heavier-duty setup: a Dana 60 or Dana Super 60 (M256 on newer trucks) up front, paired with a Sterling 10.5" or Dana M275/M300 rear, running common ratios of 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, and 4.30.

Pre-1980

Early 4x4 F-Series trucks ran a genuine solid front axle (Dana 44), the simplest and most traditional setup.

1980 - 1996/97 - The Twin Traction Beam Era

Ford introduced its distinctive Twin Traction Beam (TTB) independent front suspension in 1980, using a Dana 44 TTB variant. This defined 4x4 F-150s and Broncos throughout the 1980s and into the mid-1990s. Rear axle during this period was typically a Ford 9" or 9.75" depending on year and configuration.

1997 - The Modern IFS Switch

The tenth-generation F-150 redesign dropped the Dana 44 TTB front axle entirely in favor of a fully independent 8.8" IFS front axle. This is the single biggest driveline shift in F-150 history: from that point forward, no F-150 4x4 has used a solid front axle.

1999 - Super Duty Splits Off

F-250/F-350 moved to their own dedicated heavy-duty platform. Critically, Super Duty 4x4 trucks kept a genuine solid front axle — meaning F-150 and Super Duty have run fundamentally different front axle philosophies since 1999, which trips up a lot of shoppers cross-referencing parts or regear options between the two trucks.

2011 - Present

No major axle architecture change, but the ratio spread widened as Ford's engine lineup diversified (EcoBoost V6, diesel Power Stroke on Super Duty, hybrid PowerBoost), landing at today's 3.15 - 3.73 F-150 spread and 3.31 - 4.30 Super Duty spread.

  • Notable special editions: SVT Lightning (1993 - 95 TTB-era with the 351 Windsor; 1999 - 2004 second-gen supercharged 5.4), Raptor (debuted 2010, moved to 3.5 EcoBoost for 2017).
  • How to identify your axle: door jamb Safety Compliance Certification Label lists an axle code; Super Duty axle identification is commonly done by differential cover bolt count (10-bolt Sterling 10.5 vs. 14-bolt Dana M275/M300).
  • Known issue: NHTSA recall 23S49 affects an estimated 41,555 2023-model-year F-250/F-350 trucks with the 10.5" rear axle for a potential axle shaft fracture.
  • Cross-generation note: Super Duty front axles (Dana 50/60 family) are a completely different world from F-150's independent 8.8 — these two trucks don't share regear parts or approach.
